Mickey Rourke Plastic Surgery

Although Mickey Rourke was celebrated as a Hollywood sex symbol in the 80's, it appears those days are long gone.

Rourke is now almost unrecognisable!

The sad thing is not even a pair of sunglasses could mask the toll a boxing career has obviously taken on Rourke in spite of undergoing the knife in an attempt to correct his haggard look.

He has claimed of his chequered past: "I have nothing but regrets."

His decision to turn to a plastic surgeon in an effort to unscramble his face after years of punches and pummelling in the ring was absolutely wrong.

Mickey Rourke has admitted: "I went to a certain kind of doctor. I believed it would make things different."

Mickey Rourke has undeniably had a lot of work done to his face.

It has to be noted that Mickey Rourke is one of Hollywood's few stars to admit having plastic surgery. Not only has he admitted it, but Mickey has even stated he went to the "wrong guy" to get it done.

In detail, while Mickey was famous for his knock-down good looks in the 1980s, he's said he took it for granted and withdrew from acting so he could pursue a career as a boxer. He was good at boxing as well. Out of eight professional fights, he won six (four by knockout) and drew twice. But the sport took a toll on his movie star mug.

In 2009, Mickey told the British newspaper "The Daily Mail" that he had to get reconstructive surgery after suffering two broken noses and a busted cheek bone. "Most of (the surgery) was to mend the mess of my face because of the boxing, but I went to the wrong guy to put my face back together," he quoted as saying at the time.

In case you're curious, Mickey goes into further detail. "I had my nose broken twice. I had five operations on my nose and one on a smashed cheekbone. I had to have cartilage taken from my ear to rebuild my nose and a couple of operations to scrape out the cartilage because the scar tissue wasn't healing properly. That was one of the most painful operations, but the worst was haemorrhoids."

According to the website IMDb which posts biographies and histories of film stars, Rourke suffered a split tongue, a compressed cheekbone and two concussions from his ten professional bouts.

It has to be said that the boxing damage causes Rourke to lose his balance if he has a drink or becomes tired.

But many of you may wonder: "What happened to produce the face we saw in "The Wrestler"?"

Tarick Smaili, a board certified Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, revealed: "Starting at the top, it appears Rourke had a brow lift which is evidenced by the much raised hair line which was caused by pulling  the forehead back so much. Also, the right brow is lower and that affects the right eye, making it look smaller."

"There is evidence of excess skin left from an upper eyelid lift," Dr. Smaili claimed.  "Moving down the face, Rourke definitely had a face lift but without optimal results and with too much pulling on the deep layers of muscles. That is evidenced by the deformed dimpling you see on his lower cheeks."

"One gets a sense that Rourke is aware of his appearance because he has grown some facial hair to camouflage it. Finally, his lips seem unbalanced, probably due to some form of lip augmentation," Dr. Smaili added.

To conclude, Mickey admitted to have five rhinoplasty surgeries to repair his nose due to sports-related injuries in addition to one operation to fix his smashed cheekbones.

Aside from facial injuries, Rourke also suffered from neurological problems which forced him to leave the boxing and return to his acting career.

In 2009, the actor said in an interview that he regretted having facial cosmetic procedures because of the unnatural result.

"Most of it (plastic surgery) was to repair facial injuries because of the boxing, but I went to the wrong guy to put my face back together," Rourke declared.

According to plastic surgeons, facial plastic surgery is a complex procedure that combines science and art; for this reason, a patient should always choose a board-certified plastic surgeon who has an extensive experience in this specific surgery.

Dr. Tarick Smaili, a cosmetic plastic surgeon who did not treat Rourke, believes that interviewing previous patients can help a person determine if his doctor is able to deliver "great and natural results."

"A doctor who has no medical malpractice suit and has good records would in fact advise you to talk to his previous patients.  By contrast, if your doctor discourage you to make some background check, this is already a red flag," Smaili advised.

Mickey Rourke is a real victim of plastic surgery gone wrong. It is a pity that he had literally destroyed his amazing looks. He made many bad desicions in his life. Choosing boxing as a career was a big mistake. He is a very talented actor and he could be a major star! It is obvious that he has suffered a lot. He made a great comeback with "The Wrestler" movie. Hope that he will suprise us positively in the future!
